Scream Kings 2019, Day 18
Raul Julia

October 10, 2019 by Avery Faeth

Tonight's scream king is horror's greatest husband, Raul Julia! He got his spooky start on Broadway as the starring role of the Edward Gorey-designed "Dracula." He took a sinister turn as the ex-husband of a fashion photographer stalked by death in "The Eyes of Laura Mars" (Irvin Kershner, 1978), a John Carpenter-penned suspense thriller. In "Roger Corman's Frankenstein Unbound" (Roger Corman, 1990) he plays the classic role of Dr. Frankenstein in an unorthodox time traveling retelling. Then, in the role that made him an iconic darling to darklings everywhere, he played Gomez Addams in "The Addams Family" (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1991) and "Addams Family Values" (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1993). He brings his Latin sexuality to the role, which is often valued for its romance and intensity in his relationship with his wife Morticia. The sweetly oblivious Gomez is so eager to have his estranged brother back that he doesn't realize the man may actually be a grifter. Then, when Gomez and Morticia hire a nanny for new baby Pubert, they unwittingly unleash a greedy black widow on hapless brother Fester. Raul brought such flair, humor, and nuance to the role that it's beyond comparison to other performances of the character (fight me).
