Feeling grumpy tonight so we bring you the cynical Christmas comedy "The Ref" (Ted Demme, 1994), starring Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey, and Christine Baranski. When cat burglar Gus accidentally springs an alarm system on Christmas eve, he ends up taking a bickering couple hostage and biting off more than he can chew. As the cops circle in on him, Gus finds himself playing therapist to one of the most dysfunctional households in New England. Will they drive him nuts before the cops have a chance to nab him? Or will the Christmas spirit drag him kicking and screaming into their family? This black comedy gem is an unexpected Christmas treat.
