Christmas Countdown 2019, Day 3: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
One more Thanksgiving classic before we lose ourselves in the Christmas spirit - "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (John Hughes, 1987), starring the greats Steve Martin and John Candy. Neal Page is a cynical but devoted familyman away on a business trip days before the holiday. Early on in his journey home, he encounters both a friendly but obnoxious salesman named Del Griffith and a series of setbacks (usually hand in hand). Neal and Del are forced to balance their differences and rely on one another in their attempts to get back home. It's only after they've parted ways that Neal realizes the value of what Del has taught him about humanity and sees a way to repay the favor. A sentimental comedy with an uplifting message, this movie marked an early holiday triumph for a director who would go on to helm one of the most popular Christmas movies ever.
