Let's celebrate only three more sleeps until Christmas with the greatest childhood nostalgia trip of all, "A Christmas Story" (Bob Clark, 1983), starring Darren McGavin, Melinda Dillon, and Peter Billingsley. Ralph Parker wants only one thing for Christmas - an official Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. But everything seems to be getting in his way, from the resistance of his frazzled housewife mother to the incredulity of a beleaguered teacher to the bootheel of a belligerent Santa. Add in school bullies, peer pressure, sibling rivalry, hard truths, and the most lovingly dysfunctional parents in the midwest, and Ralphie's Christmas spirit is really going to be put to the test this holiday. A beloved tradition based on the comedy writings of Jean Shepherd, this movie is a huge departure from the director's earlier Christmas horror romp.
