Christmas Countdown 2019, Day 21
Brazil

December 12, 2019 by Avery Faeth

Tonight we're sneaking in an old favorite, "Brazil" (Terry Gilliam, 1985), starring Jonathan Pryce, Michael Palin, Kim Greist, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, and Jim Broadbent. In an alternate near future, information is tightly controlled by the government. Sam Lowry is a worker ant, caught up in a flawed system when a man named Buttle is terminated for a crime he didn't commit. In trying to cover up the mistake, he meets mysterious rebel Jill Layton, who may or may not be a terrorist. Reluctantly accepting the help of his plastic surgery-obsessed socially scheming mother and Harry Tuttle, a rogue plumber who also happens to be the real criminal Buttle took the fall for, he seeks access to her information - but at what cost? Against the backdrop of a consumer-driven world during a bleak and corporate Christmas, Sam and Jill fight to reclaim their identities and find a world outside the neon signs and desolate high rises. Credited with influencing films like "The Fifth Element," this is a seminal Christmas black comedy.
