Christmas Countdown 2019, Day 20
We're No Angels

December 12, 2019 by Avery Faeth

Allow us to introduce you to one of the greatest overlooked Christmas movies of the golden age of Hollywood, "We're No Angels" (Michael Curtíz, 1955), starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, and Aldo Rey. At the turn of the last century, a trio of charming convicts escape a prison in French Haiti with the help of a musical snake. Looking for a quick coverup and getaway, they set their sights on a frazzled shopkeeper and his family. The grift starts with them posing as hired help but quickly goes from deadly game to genuine sentiment when the family's overbearing and unscrupulous uncle comes to take control of the business. During a holiday with the family, the convicts realize that they all may be able to help each other out, albeit in ways they never would have expected. With an all-star classic cast, wickedly funny script, clever and frenetic suspense, and nostalgic soundtrack, this film is a classic in our family, and we hope you'll welcome it into your traditions.
