Heading out of the Thanksgiving holiday, we celebrate with "Home for the Holidays" (Jodie Foster, 1994). Starring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Dylan McDermott, and Anne Bancroft, this is the ultimate dysfunctional family dramedy. After giving up a promising art career, divorced mother Claudia Larson finds herself heading home for Thanksgiving alone and jobless while her daughter gets serious with her boyfriend. Claudia's black sheep gay brother shows up unexpectedly, much to the chagrin of their conservative sister and her family. In lieu of his longterm boyfriend, he's brought a charming stranger to the dinner. In between concern for her daughter, upset over her brother's relationship shakeup, and the dawning of her aunt's dementia, Claudia confronts the reality of the old saying, "You can't go home again." Honest, warm, and frank, this film is an underrated gem.
