Christmas Countdown 2019, Day 13
Black Christmas

December 12, 2019 by Avery Faeth

For the last Friday the 13th of the decade, we're going with the seasonal spook "Black Christmas" (Bob Clark, 1974), starring Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, and John Saxon. A sorority house is plagued by mysterious prank calls on the night before Christmas. The girls inside are more concerned with their own dramas, like the clash between drunken Barb and chaste Claire, or the disagreement between Jess and her pianist boyfriend Peter on whether or not to start a family. Against the backdrop of a town searching for a missing local girl, the calls quickly become more sinister as the sorority sisters disappear one by one. Who is on the other end of the line, and what exactly do they want for Christmas? Hailed as the original slasher flick, this holiday take on a popular urban legend is an early seasonal classic from a director who would later bring us one of the most seminal Christmas standards of all time.
